Africa Union 44th Executive Council 37th President Ordinary Summit: Adoption of a new Great Green Wall Initiative Strategy and Ten Years Implementation Framework.

Following over twoyears of meticulous crafting through a comprehensive, inclusive, and participatory process.
The new AU Great Green Wall Initiative Strategy and Ten Year implementation framework for 2024-2034 has neen submitted to the 44th Excutive council of the Africa Union

This process involved extensive consultations with community-based groups, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Member States, Regional Economic Communities, international development partners, the United Nations System, and a broad spectrum of the private sector.

Subsequent to its endorsement by the 5th Specialised Technical Committee, the Expert Committee, and the Ministerial Council, the strategy and framework is presentlu under review by the AU Executive Council as of today, the 15th of February, 2024.
Upon approval, the strategy will advance to the Heads of State for resolution during the summit scheduled for the 17th to 18th of February Addis Ababa.

This innovative strategy was initiated at the behest of the Ministers from all 55 Member States, propelled by a multitude of diverse factors. These factors include the prolonged application of the Harmonised Regional Strategy for the Great Green Wall Initiative exceeding a decade, and the recognition of emerging challenges and opportunities such as climate change, climate peace and security, state fragility and conflicts, demographic expansion, employment and wealth creation, migration, and the Initiative's expansion on the continent and its adoption beyond Africa.

Moreover, the advent of new technologies, a highly conducive enabling environment, and the acknowledgment of the Great Green Wall Initiative as a leading global flagship , have also been taken into account.
Additionally, the strategy addresses increasing land degradation, the adoption of new Multilateral Environmental Agreements, the transition to sustainable energy, and the evolving roles of gender and youth participation.

In essence, the new strategy is designed to augment the implementation capacities of the Member States, capitalize on the favorable financial and policy landscape, engage the private sector, and establish robust, enduring global partnerships. It aims to redefine and chart a novel course for the Initiative, setting a refreshed and ambitious agenda for its future endeavors.
