Trees for the Future (TREES) is an international non-profit organization with a central office in the United States and five field offices in West and East Africa. As a global leader in agroforestry training for over 30 years, TREES works with small holder farmers to implement sustainable land management practices and agroforestry on their farms; aimed at revitalizing degraded lands, increasing food production, reducing the impacts of climate change, enhancing technical skills and the adaptive capacities of farmers. Our signature methodology, the Forest Garden Approach, helps farmers transform their land with thousands of trees and dozens of crops, improving livelihoods and food security for themselves and their communities.
Trees for the Future (TREES) is currently working with thousands of farming families across five countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 1989, TREES has worked around the globe. In 2014, we focused our work in select African countries, where the climatic and economic challenges were most pressing and we could make the greatest impact. TREES specializes in the intersection of climate programming and adaptation, livelihoods, nutrition, and agriculture, and trains farmers in agroforestry and sustainable land use - to build vibrant regional economies, thriving food systems, and a healthier planet. Our signature methodology, the Forest Garden Approach, helps farmers transform their land with thousands of fast-growing, ecologically appropriate trees alongside dozens of other nutritious and profitable crops, creating new possibilities for themselves and their communities.
The Forest Garden Approach centers around TREES agriculture and forestry technicians conducting thousands of hours of direct field-based training with small-scale. Forest Garden projects are set up where TREES provides farmers with tools, seeds, and training while farmers are responsible for their land tenure and water. Key skills farmers learn include the knowledge to incorporate sustainable agroforestry techniques that protect the land and diversify what crops are grown. Farmers then design and develop diverse Forest Gardens comprising thousands of trees and dozens of plant species; sequestering carbon, improving food access, increasing income, and helping farmers adapt to climate change. Forest Gardens are regenerative and resilient agroforestry systems that address the challenges farmers face. They promote agrobiodiversity and the return of birds, pollinators, and other wildlife to the landscape. Forest Garden projects are set up where TREES provides farmers with tools, seeds, and training while farmers are responsible for their land tenure and water. TREES also works with local partners and CBOs to build their capacity and support the scaling up for Forest Gardens across the GGW.
Trees for the Future believes in a world where farmers leave a legacy of opportunity through sustainable land practices. We are witnessing farmers reclaiming their agency, breaking the cycles of climate change and generational poverty, and rebuilding our food systems from the ground up.
Our mission is to improve livelihoods of impoverished farmers by revitalizing degraded lands.
